25 Reasons Social Media is Not a Waste of Time for Actors

By: Heidi Dean

Social media CAN be a big waste of time if you’re using the wrong platforms for your goals or you fall down the Facebook rabbit hole. But social media is more than cute cat videos, emojis, and selfies. When used correctly, it can accelerate your acting career.

Here are 25 reasons why social media is not a waste of time for your acting career…

#1

It helps you build new relationships. Before social media, you could only meet people in person. Social media makes it easy for you to connect, build and nurture relationships online with people you want to work with.

#2

It helps you reconnect and stay top of mind with people you’ve already worked with. These connections often lead to more work.

#3

Social media is becoming part of your job as an actor. Your next contract could require you to post, live tweet, or take part in an Instagram takeover.

#4

Social media helps you find mutual friends for agent and manager referrals.

#5

It can help you find auditions (#NoJoke).

#6

Got content? Your social media following is a built-in audience for your project.

#7

Not being on social media makes you less desirable to producers and networks because you can’t share their project with your fans. Having active platforms where you can post about your projects makes you a team player.

#8

As your career grows, social media gives you a direct line of communication with your fans. This is super helpful if you screw up and want to address the issue before the media does or if there are tabloid rumors that just aren’t true. Now you can quickly reach your fans and tell them the truth.

#9

You can make money on social media promoting the products you love.

#10

You might even meet your heroes (I know an actor who just met THE ROCK…through a tweet!).

#11

You can build a supportive tribe of like-minded artists who are also #Womeninfilm or in your regional market (#AtlantaActor).

#12

You can create your own content or web series. Your content can support your resume and give you control over how you want to be seen and cast.

#13

Social media is an amazing PR tool that can expose your unique brand to thousands (or even millions) of new fans.

#14

Whether you like it or not, having a large (real) following on social can help get you cast.

#15

Social media’s not going away anytime soon. In fact, the next generation of directors, agents, producers is growing up using it. Knowing how to use it to further your career is a major asset.

#16

Social media is a great way to collect fans at every stage of your career. The audience, writers, directors, producers, casting directors and actors you work with are all potential fans. Wait to use social media and you can’t connect with them and grow your following along the way.

#17

Need a director for your web series or short film? They could be a Facebook post away!

#18

Starting a crowdfunding campaign? Having an audience on social media makes reaching your goal easier.

#19

You can build your brand and create your future one post at a time by showing the world how to cast you. This article will help you get started.

#20

Thanks to Facebook you’ll never forget a birthday again.

#21

Social media is the new business card. After meeting someone in person, it’s easier and less intrusive to connect with them on social than via email or phone.

#22

Social media lets you shine a light on the causes and charities you care about.

#23

Social media lets you bypass traditional gatekeepers and converse with people you’d never have had access to in the past.

#24

With the exception of a Facebook Fan Page (where you may have to invest in ads to see engagement), social media is free. What other actor marketing tool is free?!?!

#25

Social media gives you control in a career where you have very little.
