Remember When You Didn’t Know Any Better?

It wasn’t long ago that you committed to a career as an actor. Do you remember when that was and how excited you were? Do you remember how fearlessly you behaved or how earnestly you sought out advice? Remember your very first film or your first time out on stage? Remember how thrilled you were to land auditions? Do you remember how exciting it was to mail out your headshots and how you truly knew that your dreams were about to become reality? Weren’t those the days?

Today you know better. You’ve been around for a while and you understand how tough this business is, how difficult it is to get in the door, and how naïve you used to be when you first arrived in the big city.

Stop and think for a moment about how much easier your career pursuit was back when you didn’t know any better. Think about how much fun you had, how hopeful you felt, and how easily you celebrated even the tiniest of victories.

You can return to that place of pure joy. You don’t have to give up what you’ve learned along the way. Those lessons are invaluable. But don’t lose your sense of wonder or your love of the little things. Hang on to that starry-eyed newbie who found joy in student film projects, mediocre theatre, and self-submissions. Infuse what you know today with how you felt long ago. Success in acting is still possible for you. All you have to do is continue to believe. All you have to do is pretend you don’t know any better.

The only thing standing between you and the career of your dreams is time. So how will you choose to spend your time? When you believe in your future and work toward it, your ultimate dreams will one day become reality. Why can’t today be that day? Nothing at all prevents you from behaving as though your goals are already accomplished.

Enjoy the journey and treat yourself as though you are already the award-winning, successful, inspiring actor that you dream of becoming. The more willing you are to live this way, the more easily and quickly your vision will unfold right before your eyes. These results will not surprise you because you’ll already be living as though you have these things and so much more.

Henry Ford once said, “Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right.” It’s true about your career as well. Do you think it’s possible to live a successful and fulfilling life as a thriving artist today? Or do you think it’s too much work?

Either way, you’re right, so pick the perspective that serves you. As hokey as it may sound, living as though you’ve already made it is the most powerful thing you can do. Not only will it allow you to easily get where you want to be, but it’ll make getting there a heck of a lot more enjoyable.

You can choose your goals. You can share this vision with others. You can take inspired action each and every day. You can grow, change, and develop on your way to acting success. You can commit to your career. More importantly, you can commit to living the career of your dreams today. It’s up to you. What are you waiting for?

Thank you for this little pick me up Dallas!!!!

  2. Love this, Dallas!! I think I over-complicate things for myself; learning to “treat my business like a business” has taken the fun out of it. This is the year I discover that wide-eyed innocence again, when I pick up a script just for fun, when I get lost in my imagination whether I need to or not! =)
